A person who spiked candy with sedative and distributed them to minors at a youth camp in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offences against two children both nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight minors and a grown-up fell ill at the facility in July.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the courthouse on recently.

Yet, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was against a young boy.

The defendant was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on late November.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, detailed the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She said his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer camp which he operated.

The man played a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and request they to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She told the court Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She explained the man had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had concerns in recently.

The legal representative continued: "In the summer" his stepchild had worries about the activities, for good reason.

"They resolved" to examine in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC stated items including baby oil, ointment and injection devices were located, and his stepson notified the authorities about his suspicions.

She stated Ruben proceeded to engage in the "sweet game" with six youngsters that night - that Saturday - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"The police had not gone out by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, had stated that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.

The legal representative said the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the family member notified the authorities again.

She said the defendant then played the "treat game" in a space of five youngsters.
